5th & 6th Grade Latin Illumination Manuscript Projects

In December, 5th and 6th grade Latinists made medieval-style "illuminations" of the Christmas story from the Latin and English versions of the Bible. Students dyed their own paper with tea, illustrated the story using medieval models, and wrote in a medieval script. Here are some examples of their work.

Hannah’s Psalm of Praise
by Hannah Jo (5th Grade)

Praise the Lord for He is good,
Praise the Lord all the day.
Trust in Him and He will listen,
Have confidence in Him and pray.

Thank the Lord for His creation,
Thank the Lord for land.
He has blessed us with many friends,
He has blessed us with companions.

He has given us the scripture,
It tells us what to do.
Wealth and comfort you have given,
Your gifts are things we share.

You have given us the birds of the sky,
You have blessed us with fish in the sea.
The sheep graze on the grass,
The cows sleep in the barn.
The crops shoot from the ground,
And the trees are heavy with fruit.

If we obey, we are blessed,
But if we are sinful, we are punished.
Praise the Lord for He is good,
Praise the Lord all the day.

Psalm of Praise
by Caleb Pitts (5th Grade)

O Lord, I will praise you at any time of the day.
Lord, I will praise you from anywhere on earth.
I have been given freedom, and friends
And family that care and discipline me.

I give thanksgiving for the blood of Christ,
But I despise the evil in my heart.
My Lord has created everything in the earth,
And everything on the earth is good.

O Lord, I praise you!
I praise your mighty name!
